Mayor Tim Keller announces the first quarter crime statistics for 2018.

Crime is a top concern for Albuquerque residents. Mayor Tim Keller announced Tuesday morning the situation is getting better. Crime rates are dropping, according to a city report looking at the first quarter of this year.

The report showed that while homicides are up, property crime and violent crime are falling: for example, there were almost 800 robberies by this time last year. But this year there have been only about half that.

“All our crime rates are unacceptably high in the city,” Mayor Keller said. “But when we see this trend, it actually shows that we’re making some progress.”

Chief of Police Mike Geier said that progress is linked to an increase in traffic stops this year. Those have nearly doubled.

The mayor’s proposed city budget includes 11 percent more money for Albuquerque police… half a million of which would be used to recruit new officers.

The mayor said they’re going to share the crime stats every quarter.
