Los Reyes de Albuquerque - Part 1

Paul Ingles and Genevieve Russel

Albuquerque, NM – In 1962, Roberto Martinez, a civilian Air Force employee working at Kirtland Air Force Base, put together a little musical group to moonlight in the evenings and on the weekends. He and his trumpet-playing friend Ray Flores called the band they founded Los Reyes de Albuquerque.

For more than four and a half decades now, that band has presented and preserved the violin and guitar music of northern New Mexico. Now 80 years-old and facing prostate cancer, founder Roberto Martinez calls this coming Saturday's performance at Albuquerque's Outpost Performance Space his farewell appearance with Los Reyes de Albuquerque.

In this first installment of a special series - airing on KUNM's Morning Edition and All Things Considered - producer Paul Ingles presents the story of a family who have faced both joy and heartache, all while delivering the state's traditional music, far and wide. University of New Mexico professor Enrique La Madrid narrates.

Produced by Paul Ingles and Genevieve Russel. You can see pictures and hear the series in it's entirety at LosReyesStory.org.
